In an ever competing market of online scientific publications, some of which freely available, Elsevier aims to provide extra services, both for authors and researchers.
The Verticals project brings a minimalist, de-cluttered, article-focussed experience while adding useful features to enhance the workflow of researchers.
Brief §
Enhance and optimize current article design and typography, making the overall design responsive.
Look into features and functionalities to enhance a researchers’ workflow and optimize usability and accessibility.
Create a set of best practices regarding web design and its implementation.
Make it easy to translate the product and its design to an expected ScienceDirect rebranding process.
Process §
With the rebranding phase in mind, and making it easier to implement, the design features a minimalistic look, with content and functionality always leading above decoration.
‘Vertical’ features are added that allow researchers to easily dive deeper into the subject matter of the article.
A fully working interface prototype, with a third party developing the back-end, is used for testing purposes and stakeholder discussions.
The feedback gathered from user tests is used to iterate the visual design and interactive prototype.
